Addis Ababa to Danakil and Afar

A volcanic desert lying up to 125 metres below sea level — home to the permanently active Erta Ale lava lake, the alien sulphur landscapes of Dallol and the ancient salt caravans of the Afar people. A serious expedition. We make it possible.

The Danakil Depression expedition from Addis Ababa is a 4 to 6 day journey covering 900 km to the Danakil interior. It requires a Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4 convoy, mandatory Afar Regional Government permits, armed scouts and Danakil-specialist drivers, and is best travelled October to March to avoid extreme summer heat.

03

Why the Danakil is Worth the Effort

Nowhere else on Earth combines active volcanism, surreal mineral landscapes, extreme heat and living traditional culture in the way the Danakil does. The Erta Ale lava lake — one of only a handful of permanent lava lakes in the world — glows orange and red against the night sky. Dallol’s hydrothermal fields look more like another planet than Ethiopia. The Afar salt caravans — thousands of camels loaded with hand-cut salt blocks — have crossed this desert for centuries and continue today.

04

Day 1: Addis to Awash National Park (230 km · 3–4 hrs)

The first leg descends the Rift Valley escarpment to Awash, passing through Adama (Nazret) on the expressway before heading northeast towards the Afar lowlands. Awash National Park is an excellent overnight base — the park has good wildlife (oryx, kudu, baboon, crocodile) and comfortable lodges beside the Awash River gorge.

05

Day 2: Awash to Semera / Logia (210 km · 3–4 hrs)

Continuing northeast, the road enters the Afar regional capital Semera. The landscape flattens and dries dramatically as you descend below 500 metres. This is Afar country — semi-nomadic pastoralists, volcanic plains, acacia scrub and intense heat. Semera is the last major town with reliable fuel, supplies and infrastructure before the Danakil interior.

06

Day 3: Semera to Erta Ale Base Camp (~250 km · 4–5 hrs)

The transition to desert track begins here. The drive to the Erta Ale base camp at Dodom crosses black lava fields and passes salt flats that shimmer in the heat. There are no fuel stations, no towns and no assistance on this section. Convoy of two vehicles is the standard practice.

07

Night of Day 3: Trek to the Erta Ale Caldera

The trek to Erta Ale’s caldera (14 km · 3–4 hours each way) is done at night to avoid the peak heat. You hike across a black lava field by torchlight to reach the crater rim. Looking down into an active lava lake — a churning lake of molten rock — is an experience unlike any other on Earth. Overnight at the crater rim is possible with sleeping mats.

08

Day 4: Return and Drive to Dallol

Return from Erta Ale and drive to Dallol — one of the hottest inhabited places on Earth and home to the most visually surreal landscape in the country. The hydrothermal field at Dallol is a maze of yellow, green, orange and white mineral formations built by acid springs and salt. Gas masks are required. Visit in the morning before the midday heat becomes prohibitive.

09

Day 5–6: Salt Flats, Camel Caravans and Return

The Afar salt flats — particularly the Karum salt lake — are where the traditional Afar salt caravan trade still operates. Watching thousands of camels loaded with hand-cut salt blocks move across the white salt plain at dawn is one of the great scenes of African travel. The return route can vary, with options to return via Mekelle (north) or Semera (south) depending on current road and security conditions.

Vehicle Requirements

No vehicle other than a Toyota Land Cruiser 4×4 (or equivalent) is appropriate for the Danakil interior. Our Danakil-experienced drivers have been operating this route for years and know the lava field navigation.
