Lalibela is Ethiopia’s most iconic destination — a mountain town whose 11 medieval rock-hewn churches are carved directly into volcanic rock. The overland journey from Addis Ababa is long but deeply rewarding, passing through highland landscapes and historic towns.

Bahir Dar sits on the southern shore of Lake Tana — Ethiopia’s largest lake and the source of the Blue Nile. Island monasteries, the thundering Blue Nile Falls and a gentle lakeside city make this one of Ethiopia’s most popular routes for visitors.

Gondar — the Royal City — combines medieval castles, ancient churches and a lively modern city. Combined with a trek into the Simien Mountains (home to gelada baboons and the endangered Ethiopian wolf), this is the crown jewel of the Northern Historical Circuit.

The most accessible major route from Addis Ababa, the road south to Hawassa passes through a series of beautiful Rift Valley lakes alive with hippos, flamingos and over 300 bird species. Hawassa itself is a relaxed lakeside city ideal for a short break or longer stay.

The Danakil Depression is one of the most extreme and extraordinary places on Earth — a volcanic landscape of sulphur springs, salt flats and the permanently active Erta Ale lava lake, all sitting below sea level in one of the hottest inhabited regions on the planet. This is a specialist expedition route.

Southern Ethiopia’s Omo Valley is home to some of Africa’s most culturally distinct indigenous peoples — the Mursi, Hamer, Konso and Dorze among them. This is a longer, more challenging route requiring experienced drivers and robust 4×4 vehicles, and rewards those who make the journey with an unmatched cultural experience.

Best time to travel: October to May (dry season) is the best period for most routes. The long rainy season (June–September) makes many unpaved roads difficult or impassable, particularly in the highlands and the south. The Danakil is best visited October to March to avoid the most extreme heat.

Multi-day trips: Most routes require overnight stays. We can recommend hotels, lodges and guesthouses at every point on each route. Your driver will be accommodated nearby and will join you each morning at your hotel.
