Lalibela is Ethiopia’s most iconic destination — a mountain town whose 11 medieval rock-hewn churches are carved directly into volcanic rock. The overland journey from Addis Ababa is long but deeply rewarding, passing through highland landscapes and historic towns.

Southern Ethiopia’s Omo Valley is home to some of Africa’s most culturally distinct indigenous peoples — the Mursi, Hamer, Konso and Dorze among them. This is a longer, more challenging route requiring experienced drivers and robust 4×4 vehicles, and rewards those who make the journey with an unmatched cultural experience.

Best time to travel: October to May (dry season) is the best period for most routes. The long rainy season (June–September) makes many unpaved roads difficult or impassable, particularly in the highlands and the south. The Danakil is best visited October to March to avoid the most extreme heat.
