02

Addis Ababa to Debre Markos (300 km · 4 hrs)

The road north from Addis follows the main highway through Debre Berhan and the Debre Sina escarpment — one of Ethiopia’s most dramatic road sections, with sweeping views over the Afar lowlands. After descending the escarpment the road continues northwest through fertile highland farmland. Debre Markos, capital of East Gojam, is the natural halfway point for a meal and fuel stop.

03

Debre Markos to Bahir Dar (265 km · 3–4 hrs)

The second half of the journey crosses the Blue Nile Gorge — a breathtaking descent and ascent through one of Africa’s great geographical features. The new Chinese-built bridge is modern and well maintained. After the gorge, the road continues northwest through Gojam farmland before arriving at Bahir Dar’s palm-lined avenues.

The crossing of the Blue Nile Gorge descends over 1,000 metres into the canyon and climbs back out — allow extra time and stop at the viewpoints.

04

Lake Tana Island Monasteries

Lake Tana contains 37 islands, 20 of which host ancient monasteries and churches. The most visited — Ura Kidane Mihret, Kebran Gabriel, Debre Maryam — date from the 14th to 17th centuries and contain extraordinary murals, illuminated manuscripts and sacred artefacts. Boat hire from Bahir Dar harbour takes 30–60 minutes to the main monasteries.

05

Blue Nile Falls (Tis Abay)

Located 30 km from Bahir Dar, the Blue Nile Falls are one of Africa’s most impressive waterfalls — up to 400 metres wide and 45 metres high in the wet season. The falls are accessible by road and short hike and are best visited in the morning. Note that water diversion for a hydroelectric scheme means flows vary by season.

06

Combining Bahir Dar with Gondar and Lalibela

Vehicle and Driver Advice

This is one of Ethiopia’s more accessible long routes. A Toyota Prado or similar 4×4 SUV handles the journey comfortably. A saloon car can manage the main paved highway in dry conditions but is not recommended for detours or wet season travel. If combining with Gondar or Lalibela, a Land Cruiser 4×4 is recommended for the complete circuit.
