Addis Ababa to Gondar and the Simien Mountains

Gondar — the Royal City — was Ethiopia's imperial capital for over 200 years. Combined with a drive into the Simien Mountains, this route delivers one of Ethiopia's richest overland experiences.

Addis Ababa to Gondar is 730 km via Bahir Dar, best travelled over two days. Gondar offers the UNESCO Fasil Ghebbi royal enclosure, Debre Berhan Selassie church and Fasilides Bath. The Simien Mountains lie 100 km north of Gondar and require a Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4 for park access.

03

Day 2: Bahir Dar to Gondar (175 km · 2.5–3 hrs)

The road from Bahir Dar to Gondar heads northeast through rolling highland countryside. It is mostly paved and in reasonable condition. Passing through small Amhara farming towns, the drive takes about 2.5–3 hours and leaves the rest of Day 2 for Fasil Ghebbi.

04

Fasil Ghebbi — The Royal Enclosure

The walled Royal Enclosure in the centre of Gondar contains six castles and a series of connecting tunnels, all built during the reigns of Emperors Fasilides, Yohannes I, Iyasu I and others from the 17th–18th centuries. The scale and ambition of the complex — built without European architects or technology — is remarkable. Allow a full half-day for a thorough visit.

05

Debre Berhan Selassie & Fasilides' Bath

Debre Berhan Selassie — a short walk from the Royal Enclosure, this church is renowned for its ceiling, covered with over a hundred painted cherub faces. It is considered one of the finest examples of Ethiopian church painting.

Fasilides’ Bath — located 2 km from the city centre, this sunken pool complex was used for the annual Timkat (Epiphany) celebrations. It is still flooded and used during Timkat today.

06

Simien Mountains: Day Trip or Overnight Trek

The road from Gondar to Debark (the park entrance town) is 100 km and takes approximately 2 hours by Land Cruiser — partly paved, partly gravel. From Debark, the park road climbs into the high plateau. A scout/guide from the park is required and can be arranged on arrival.

  • UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa’s most dramatic highland landscapes
  • Home to gelada baboons, Ethiopian wolves and Walia ibex
  • Day trip possible — reach Sankaber camp for gelada viewing
  • Overnight trek: 2–5 days for a fuller mountain experience
  • 4×4 mandatory inside the park — no saloon vehicles permitted

Gelada baboons — found only in Ethiopia — are the Simien’s most iconic wildlife. Enormous groups of hundreds of individuals feed on the cliff edges at dawn and dusk.
