Hawassa is the capital of the Sidama Region, on the shore of Lake Hawassa in the Rift Valley. The drive from Addis Ababa is one of the easiest long routes in the country: about 275 km of paved highway past Lake Ziway and the Shashemene junction, taking roughly four hours. Hawassa Airport (AWA) is a short flight from Addis Ababa and close to the lakeside hotels.

Most local bookings involve Hawassa Industrial Park, Hawassa University, NGO programme offices, conferences and lakeside stays, including trips to the fish market and Tabor Hill. Hawassa is also the natural first stop for travellers continuing south to Arba Minch, Konso and the Omo Valley.
