The usual road route from Addis Ababa heads north via Dessie and Woldia, and the final section climbs a steep mountain road, partly gravel, that needs an experienced driver and a 4x4. Many visitors fly into Lalibela Airport (LLI) instead and use a driver locally.
Local bookings centre on the 11 rock-hewn churches, including Bete Giyorgis, plus excursions to Asheton Maryam monastery above the town. Timkat in January is the busiest time of the year, and vehicles and hotels should be booked months in advance for it.
