Transit and Layover Transport from Bole Airport

Bole is one of Africa's great connecting hubs. Whether your layover is 3 hours or 24, here is exactly what you can do with your time.

Bole airport layovers under 3 hours should stay airside; 3 to 5 hours suit a Skylight Hotel day room; 5 to 8 hours allow rest or a short Bole district visit; 8 to 12 hours allow a Merkato or museum trip; 12 to 24 hours support an overnight stopover. Leaving the airport requires an Ethiopian e-visa.

01

Transit vs Layover: The Key Difference

  • Transit (airside): you stay inside the secure terminal. No immigration, no visa required. Suitable for layovers under 3 hours.
  • Layover (landside): you clear immigration, leave the terminal and enter Ethiopia. A visa is required, or you must qualify for visa-on-arrival.

02

Visa Status for Layover Passengers

  • E-visa (recommended): available online at evisa.gov.et. Single-entry tourist visa valid 30 days. Apply at least 3 business days before travel.
  • Visa on arrival: available at Bole for most nationalities. USD 82 fee. Queues can be slow during busy periods.
  • Visa-free access: a limited number of African and select other nationalities. Check the current exemption list.
  • Transit without visa: airside only — you cannot leave the terminal.

03

Airside Facilities (When You Stay Inside)

  • Ethiopian Airlines Lounges: Cloud Nine (Business/First) and SheBa (Premium Economy). Access by ticket class or Priority Pass.
  • Restaurants and cafes: multiple outlets, open 24 hours during busy periods.
  • Duty Free: large Ethiopian Airlines retail area — coffee, crafts, spirits, electronics.
  • Prayer rooms: available in the terminal.
  • Currency exchange: bureau de change kiosks at reasonable rates.
  • Wi-Fi: free Ethiopian Airlines Wi-Fi in the terminal.
  • Showers: available in the Business Class lounge.

04

Under 3 Hours — Stay Airside

With less than 3 hours, do not attempt to clear immigration and leave. Customs and immigration can be slow during busy arrival waves and you risk missing your connection. Use airside facilities, visit a lounge if you have access, eat, and head to your gate.

05

3–5 Hours — Transit Hotel (Skylight)

With 3–5 hours, the best use of time is a day room at the Skylight Hotel — Ethiopian Airlines' official hotel, 2 km from the terminal, served by an Ethiopian Airlines shuttle.

06

5–8 Hours — Extended Rest or Bole District

With 5–8 hours, take a proper rest at a hotel near the airport, or visit the Bole district 5–10 minutes away.

  • Bole Road: Addis's main commercial strip — cafes, restaurants, money changers
  • Edna Mall: shopping centre with food court, cinema and international brands
  • Bole Medhane Alem Cathedral: one of Addis's most impressive modern churches
  • Local coffee and lunch: a proper Ethiopian coffee ceremony and injera meal

07

8–12 Hours — Half-Day City Visit

  • National Museum of Ethiopia: 25–45 mins from Bole · 2–3 hrs needed
  • Entoto Natural Park: 35–50 mins · 2–3 hrs
  • Merkato (Africa's largest market): 30–50 mins · 1–2 hrs
  • Holy Trinity Cathedral: 25–40 mins · 1 hr
  • Bole Medhane Alem: 5–10 mins · 45 mins
  • Coffee ceremony + lunch: 5–10 mins · 1–2 hrs

08

12–24 Hours — Mini Stopover

  • Skylight Hotel (2 km) — convenient for re-accessing the airport
  • Capital Hotel and Spa (5 km) — good value, central Bole area
  • Sheraton Addis (6 km) — luxury night between long-haul flights
  • Hyatt Regency or Marriott (8–9 km) — international business standard
