  • Valid passport — original required
  • Ethiopian visa — current and valid
  • International Driving Permit (IDP) — mandatory, issued in your home country
  • Home country driving licence — must match the IDP, both carried together
  • Minimum age: 21 years (some operators 23)
  • Credit card — for security deposit (USD 300–600)

04

The International Driving Permit (IDP)

The IDP is required for all foreign nationals who want to drive a vehicle themselves in Ethiopia. It is not issued in Ethiopia — obtain it in your home country before travel.

  • UK: Post Office or AA/RAC (approx. £5.50)
  • US: AAA or AATA (approx. USD 20)
  • EU: national motoring associations
  • Most countries: national automobile club

Carry your original home country licence alongside the IDP at all times — the IDP is not a standalone document. IDPs from unofficial third-party websites are not recognised; only IDPs issued under the 1949 or 1968 Vienna Conventions are valid.

Documents for Corporate and NGO Clients

  • Organisation letterhead confirming the hire and the employee/representative travelling
  • Business licence or NGO registration certificate (first-time bookings)
  • Authorised signatory details for invoicing

Documents at Police Checkpoints

Ethiopia has numerous police and military checkpoints, particularly outside major cities. You may be asked to present:

  • Your passport and visa
  • IDP and home licence (self-drive only)
  • Vehicle registration document
  • Vehicle insurance certificate

Our drivers carry all required vehicle documents. The vehicle file in every hire car includes insurance, registration and our rental company licence.
