Is Self-Drive Legal in Ethiopia for Foreigners?
Yes — self-drive car hire is legal in Ethiopia for foreign nationals, subject to the correct documentation. Ethiopia recognises the International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside a valid home country driving licence. You do not need an Ethiopian licence to rent and drive as a foreign visitor.
However, the legal position is more nuanced than in many Western countries:
- Ethiopian traffic law applies in full — offences, at-fault accidents and third-party liability are your responsibility.
- Police checkpoints are common; you will be required to present your licence, IDP and vehicle documentation on request.
- Rental companies are legally required to verify your IDP before releasing a self-drive vehicle.
- Insurance typically covers third-party liability only. Comprehensive cover is limited and must be confirmed in writing.
